Many parents regard this combination as a staple in the healthy snack world. The question is: how did such an unappealingly named snack explode into a modern-day household favorite?<\/p>\n<p>To answer this puzzler, I did some serious research\u2014read: three minutes of browsing Wikipedia\u2014into the etymology of \u201cAnts on a Log.\u201d Apparently the snack made its debut way back in the 1950s, right there alongside \u201cJailhouse Rock\u201d and <em>I Love Lucy.<\/em> According to the article, you can swap out peanut butter for cream cheese and still call it \u201cAnts on a Log.\u201d And the combinations didn\u2019t stop there, either: there are tons of variations already out there, including \u201cGnats on a Log\u201d (substitute currants for raisins), \u201cAnts on Vacation\u201d (omit raisins), \u201cAnts on a Slip \u2018n Slide\u201d (top the peanut butter with honey before adding raisins), and my personal favorite, \u201cHippopotamuses on Thomases\u201d (serve half an English muffin with peanut butter and prunes). Well, I won\u2019t leave you in suspense. Below are 21 fun ways to reinvent \u201cAnts on a Log.\u201d Some are probably more palatable than others. I actually bought a bunch of celery and tested them as I was writing this article.
